Language

genuineeeegenuinee:

People who are marginalized can often tell you their experiences way before some study proves them correct, but often times, we don’t know the language.

Way before I knew the term white privilege, I knew what it was. I knew that certain people, based on their skin and other physical features, were given more opportunities than others,

but I didn’t have the terminology.

(And this is one of the reasons I want to teach English, not just to teach about great works of fiction, but to teach about how language can be helpful to our lives—literally.)

Yet, this bothers me, still.

Some people do not have access to the sources that will grant them the words that speak to their experience. Because of this, they may never be heard.

It’s weird how even “activism” exists in this realm that not many can afford to practice.
