i always learned that “developing countries” or ”paises en via de desarollo” was a good alternative for “third world”. “still-suffering victims of colonial imperialist atrocities” is a bit wordy, but also a viable alternative
Yeah, developing countries still sticks in my mouth. I just find it really hard to separate this linguistic use of developing from the capitalist hegemony of “they’re not at the same level of us, therefore they’re getting to where we are but just not doing it well yet”. It’s an, oh-they’re-poor-they-don’t-have-good-capitalism-working-for-them-yet as if the global system will suddenly forget it’s exploiting their cheap, “un-developed” labour for it’s own benefit.
